Two of your most important marketing assets these days are your website and email list. Hopefully, you are using an email newsletter program with a sign-up box on your website, and you are sending out monthly emails to your customers. If you aren’t taking advantage of your email list, now is the time to start. Let’s talk about the best ways to leverage these marketing tools.

First, we need to look at the inherent problems with social media and SEO. With social media, the challenge is that not everyone is guaranteed to see your post because different people look at their feed at different times during the week. With SEO, your competitors can zap you out of your first-page ranking just like that by paying someone to rank them higher.

But your email list is different. The customers on your list have voluntarily signed up and are waiting to receive information from you. Plus your emails are guaranteed to be delivered to their inbox. If you have a list of 500 contacts, every person will see the subject line of your email and possibly open it. Even if they don’t open your email, just seeing your subject line keeps you in their mind on a monthly basis.

Now let’s talk about how to grow your email list. Social media is a great way to drive people to your website and email signup, but you have to know how to use it properly. Once a customer is on your website, the site should be easy to navigate and display an easy way for customers to sign up to your newsletter. Your site also needs to have a dedicated mobile version—if you don’t, Google will penalize your rankings. Make sure your mobile version has a fairly prominent signup box, too.

One way to use SEO to drive traffic to your website is to post weekly articles to your blog. Google gives some preference to websites that are updated regularly, and if you can load your blog posts with keyword-rich content, then all the better. Plus, the blog is a perfect way to position yourself as an expert in your field and is an effective tool to entice potential customers.
