Use the right font for the job

Today I’m continuing the conversation about fonts with a short lesson on how to pick the right font for the job.

If color lends emotion to your piece, and design elements such as photography lend visual impact, then fonts give character. They also impart meaning and context.

As you can see below, fonts can be: Thrilling. Playful. Serious. Emotional. Denote old times. Denote the future.

They can range from wild and free to ultra clean and organized.

As an example, using a cutesy handwritten font for a thriller book cover isn’t the right feel. You need a font that is sleek, tall, and modern.

You also don’t want to use a rave font for a farmer's market flyer. The simple, more friendly font on the right flyer is better suited.

Make sure your font is appropriate to the piece, and backs up the concept and emotion you’ve set in place with your color and design element choices.
